What could be better than planning a beach wedding in Malibu? Planning a wedding with a dream couple, dream team…. and a blue dress! Ooooh that blue wedding dress.
Colleen and Marty planned their wedding in Malibu while living in Arizona. At the early stages of planning, Colleen sent us a picture of her “dream skirt;” a beautiful hand painted blue skirt blowing in the desert wind. From that moment, she sought out the blue skirt and we designed their day around the blues in the skirt. Not only did she find the skirt, but she found a killer top for that skirt that ended up being another dress (that she wore under the skirt) by the incredibly talented Miss Hayley Paige. Both designers were incredible to work with, treating Colleen like a true princess and even rushing her orders so she could wear them in time.
Water and texture were our key design words. Every little detail was thought out, many thanks to Colleen who put a lot of thought into everything… especially her dress, accessories, and what the bridesmaids wore. While she was precise in planning exactly what she would be wearing, she wanted to make sure that her ladies were comfortable in their beautiful Joanna August dresses as well.
When initially discussing wedding plans, it was actually Marty who suggested that Colleen should wear a colored dress. He was more than blown away by her stunning Chantel Lauren skirt and Miss Hayley Paige “Kenny” dress pairing. She radiated beauty and almost floated, she looked so happy.
When first planning their wedding, Colleen and Marty talked about having a ceremony that included all of their guests but the more we talked through it, the more they realized that they really wanted something small and intimate – with their closest friends and family by their sides.
They were married on a small, cozy little beach at the home of their family friend, a long-time Malibu beach lifeguard. This friend carved out a pathway in the rocks down the hill, that ended up serving as somewhat of an amphitheater style of seating for guests as the tide was rapidly approaching and we were quickly losing the beach.
Their very good friend and roommate, Hannah, served as their officiant and bridesmaid. The ceremony was very personal and intentional – while also being full of excitement each time the water surged up to their feet. Colleen’s skirt was hand painted and couldn’t get wet so it was a team effort to lift it up and keep it dry – keeping the ceremony light and fun and drawing out some of Colleen’s biggest smiles of the day.
We learned at the rehearsal dinner that Marty has a huge thing for Tommy Bahama shirts so it was only fitting that he chose the perfect blue Tommy Bahama shirts for himself and the groomsmen. His selection was a perfect match with the stunning bridesmaid dresses.
This dress. Oh MY GOODNESS!
The gorgeous wedding bouquets were made by a close friend of Colleen’s family. Shelley Depry knocked the floral design out of the park, exceeding our original design and concept.
Following the ceremony, ceremony attendees, the bridal party, and family, headed up to Marty’s family home in the Malibu hills to meet the rest of their guests for cocktail hour. It was a beautiful but hot Malibu day so everyone was thankful to be greeted by thirst quenching margaritas.
Cute planted succulents, pulling from the natural landscape, served as guest escort carts. Aside from being a beach wedding, surfing has played a significant part of Marty and his family’s life. Marty’s dad hand carved a surfboard guest book as a nod to this special and favorite family past time.
The tables were kept minimal, with the florals taking the focus. Rattan chargers added a little extra dose of texture to place settings to pop the plates and napkins off of the neutral palette.
Dinner was catered by El Cholo Restaurant, more close family friends. Guests thoroughly enjoyed the extremely fresh menu.
Who could forget the kiddos? Not Colleen! The kids table was set on the vibrant blue table with cookies, crayons, and coloring books.
Marty’s parents’ home is stunning – a dream home that was built after spending years living on the property in a trailer home. Their landscaping is exquisite with fun architectural details that weren’t forgotten about in the floral design process.
The evening was so fun and so full of love, friendship, and personal touches. Every person we met was kind and emitted their good person vibe. We weren’t surprised that their guests would be cool; good people attract good people.
The dance floor was hopping all night thanks to the amazing DJ Ben Goldstein. But it really got going when Colleen shed her beautiful blue skirt and rocked the gorgeous Kenny dress solo for the rest of the night.
The dessert table wouldn’t have been complete without churros with fanciful toppings like caramel and chocolate sauce and a cake handmade by their officiant/bridesmaid/best friend extraordinaire.
Their perfect day was made more perfect at the end of the night when we pulled chairs and outdoor couches onto the driveway for a showing of their same day video edit by the incredible Moving Pictures team. Colleen and Marty wanted to surprise guests who couldn’t be part of their ceremony with footage from earlier in the day. Moving Pictures exceeded all expectations with their stunning and touching video, telling the story of the day…. flawlessly. It was the perfect nightcap to an extremely special day…. drawing a lot of happy tears.
What felt like a weekend getaway with friends (we were lucky enough to travel with our friends at Moving Pictures), was made even better because of the amazing team we were so fortunate to work with. Colleen and Marty are awesome people who treat everyone like friends which made our jobs so easy… and so fun.
